Tuesday 3rd August mileage 3662 Lakselv Norway

Weather mixed all day,  but windy at Norkapp.
Good nights sleep, and everything dry all except my Y's and socks which will dry in the breeze attached to the back of the bike.  Set off for Norkapp, no incidents just a nice drive through beautiful scenery.  Started to see reindeer that seem to wait for passing vehicles to get close before deciding to cross the road.  Every 100 miles or so I stop and fill up with petrol and then get a cofee and snack.  I cannot find the cable that goes from the USB outlet to my IPOD.  I have looked everywhere and think that I either lost it during the famous pannier incident when I pitched everything out of the pannier to fix it, or I left it in the library by mistake when I took out the camera cable.  The other day I saw in a petrol station a multiway adaptor that allows you to charge different phones and Iphone, Ipod so I will try and pick up one of these on my travels.  So far I have tried about 6 filling stations and although lots have multiway adaptors none seem to have the Iphone connection like the device I saw a few days back.

The road fron Oldenfjord up to Norkapp runs around the coast then up over the top of the peninsular.  It was a sunny day but getting ever more windy as you approach the cape and I was looking forward to getting some good views from the Cape.  At about 1 km from the cape the clouds just close in and shroud out all views.  As you arrive they charge you 215kr to go to the Cape and as you think I've come this far it seems mean not to go to the end, but you couldn't see a thing, and all that was there was tourist shops.
I had to park the bike in the right direction I was concerned the wind that was now howling across would blow it over.   AT the Cape there are loads of "real hairy bikers" riding Harleys and with beards, and they parked all their bikes in a row.
So bought a sticker for the pannier like a good biker tourist and after about 30 mins decided enough is enough !
On the way out saw a chap arriviing on a 1000cc V-strom.  We talked for awhile. he was from Germany.
At about 20km from Norkapp there is an airport at a place called Honningvag where people fly in to go to Norkapp and then get bussed to the Cape.  The transport company that ran this service were Veolia transport.  I took a photo of the sign and sent it to Peter Dawson, Martin Hincks and Graham Hall.

Set tomtom for a place called Ivalo in Finland and off we go !
The local indigenous people here are called Sami and live in Wigwam stlye tents.  They are at the side of the road and selling tourist souvenirs.

At about 7:00pm arrived at a place in Norway about 60Km from the Finland border called Lakselv.
Stopped the night in an Hotel  830Kr and decided to splash out on beer and a steak , another 300kr.  Delicious !!

Looked at map and I have a good 3-4 days riding down through Finland to get to Helsinki.

  1. The photo looks like tipis, rather than wigwams which are shorter and more rounded. Veolia really are a global company then!
