Woken up early with the sound of tractors starting up and passing under my window. Some of them are very low revving diesel engines and sound like the engines you get on trawler boats!!
Breakfast of juice, coffee and scrambled eggs. Rain had stopped and set off on dry roads, tomtom set for Innsbruck via Lofer. Because the weather was good and the views better decided to park in layby and take some photos. Bugger me again managed not to put the side stand down correctly and had to lay the bike (gently) down on it's side. This time I thought I will take a photo before trying to pick it up.
I had just filled up with petrol and the take was full to the brim. I started to smell petrol and so quickly removed the luggage and picked the bike up quite easily. You can see the puddle of petrol left on the ground ( I moved the bike forward the last thing I wanted was the bike under a pool of petrol that somehow manages to catch light!!)
Pressed on and came upon an accident that had just happened, the police had blocked the road and an emergency helicopter had just landed right in the middle of the road.
I seemed that a cyclist had been knocked down, but I only deduced this by watching the police examine a pedalcycle. They secured the person on a stretcher, with great care to keep their neck stable, and then loaded them into the heleicopter and away. There was no vehicle with damage eveident! We were stopped at the scene for about 30-40 mins.
Missed a great photo opportunity when I came round a bend and there was a herd of cows (50+) all with huge alpine bells round their necks and decorated headgear. They made a graet sound as they walked passed us along the road. I couldn't get parked and the camera out before they had passed!!
Noticed a collection of bikers and so stopped and parked up amongst them. It was a meeting of an Italian classic motorcycle club. My bike looked realy out of place amongst all the antique bikes. The people were vewry friendly and interested in where I had been. I took a lot of photos of all the bikes along with other weird vehicles that were stored in the basement of the motorcycle store.
Had lunch of veal burger then moved on.
At Innsbruck decided to save a little time by using the motorway. As I came across a bridge people were doing bungee jumps from the centre. Parked at the adjacent stop and went back to take photo and see what was going on.
People were queing to do bungee jumps. These were really high, there is no way I would attempt anything like that, I have too much knowledge of lifting gear failures!!
Sometimes it seemed whole families were going to jump, mam, dad and children (12-14) ??? The cost was €145 per person and then another €25 for the DVD. Most people seemed to go with the DVD option!!
Recession what recession?? Took a video of one person jumping, and photos of people dangling!!
Weather had been good for most of the day and now the road from Vipetano to Merano went over a pass called something like the Timmeljock Pass. I had no sooner started on this road than the weather closed in again and the rain started to fall!! Up into the clouds, visibility poor, silver audi coming the other way without lights!!! So another tiptoe endurance over alpine pass. I wonder what I have done to anger the weather god!!
Came down into Merano but couldn't find a place in an hotel. Really wet pressed on but found a bed in a "Gasthos" on the outskirts of town.
More later
