Listened to financial reports on CNN and it seems the economy is not getting any better.
Packed the bike and re-fixed the right handguard into position with tie-wraps I had brought with me.
Set tomtom for Eger in Hungary as Slovakia is on a shutdown with 1st September being a national holiday.
The roads in town are awful, more potholes and repairs than road. The weather is bad again, heavy rain and wet roads. I'm paranoid about lack of grip in the wet, bike seemed very wobbly and slippery at times. I stoppede and checked the tyres in detail. Back tyre still has the mould tags down the middle of the tread. Looks still absolutely brand new. Pressures seem ok.
Carried on and had a slippery incident crossing a level crossing where the rails were running at an acute angle to the road. The back of the bike just wanted to keep going with the rails !!! Carried on tentatively feeling my way around the corners. Going slow and giving myself plenty of stopping distance.
Crossed over into Hungary and the roads seemed to improve straight away.
Weather started to improve, and stopped at a small cafe in a village between Mishal and Eger for some goulash soup and iced tea. Feeling better now that I am warm in the inside and the weather has improved!!
Stopped on a railway bridge and took a photo of Mishal. It shows loads of russian style apartment blocks in the distance with what looks like a Castle Cement works in the foreground.
Stopped in Eger and it looks to be a nice place. The guidebook says it is famopus for it's red wine called " Bulls Blood" Parked up and made bike and belongings secure then walked into town. Found an internewt cafe so updated the blog.
Decided to stop in Eger overnight and sample the red wine!! Looked up the cheapest accomodation in Eger (7000fl, about 20 pounds), which is called the Tourist Motel, but it seemed to be closed up for the season. Just down the street there looked to be a reasonable looking hotel, so made enquiries and room was 11000fl but when I looked at the room it looked so inviting I decided to pay the higher price.
Did all my dirty washing and hung up to dry on the oversized heated towel rail / radiator.
I had asked the woman at the reception where I should eat tonight. She recommended a place called Francesco's, so out I went to locate the restaurant. Found it eventually right in the middle of the town square after I had walked all round the town asking people for instructions.
It was worth it I had a marvellous meal.
Beer while reading the menu, fried smoked mozzerela cheese with a mixed salad starter, followed by a superb steak done in a red wine and mushroom sauce with croquette potatos. All this accompanied by 3 glasses of gold medal red wine at 120fl a glass. Desert of hot rasperries with vanilla ice cream, and then an italian liquer coffee to finish. The whole meal only cost me 7500fl (about 21 pounds) !!
Also noticed another storks nest perched on a village telegraph post .
More later
